Another Canadian HMD preview

A July 19th post on Northernstars.ca previews the Home Movie Day festivities planned for the Cinematheque Ontario in Toronto.

There was a time when the very mention of watching home movies would cause house guests to invent any strange excuse to be able to beat a hasty retreat before the lights dimmed and scratchy 8mm soundless movies jerked and stuttered across a wobbly home movie screen or were projected on some blank living room wall. But home movies have been gaining a new respect.

Home Movie Day in The New Yorker

One of the most exciting stories from the 2006 Home Movie Day was the rediscovery of boxing champ Jose Torres’s wedding film at the New York City event. The whole remarkable chain of events that led to the film being reunited with its owners is related in a Talk of the Town piece in this week’s issue of The New Yorker.

After you read this piece you’ll want to see the film itself, of course. And you’re in luck, because be shown at Anthology Film Archives at 9:00 pm on August 1 as part of their special screening event, The Mistress & The Muse: The Films of Norman Mailer. Special thanks are due to Home Movie Day sponsors Colorlab for their quick and conscientious transfer work on the film last summer, which made it possible for Jose and Ramona Torres to view the film at their 45th anniversary party!
