SUMMARY:Launch of the Dr. Frank McDowell Collection
DESCRIPTION:On this Home Movie Day\, we are excited to launch the Dr. Frank McDowell Collection. \nDr Frank McDowell created a series of cine films that explored his home life and the wider world\, while working as a hospital doctor in Belfast and County Down. The films featured here afford a taste of his extensive collection. With a painterly eye\, Dr. McDowell’s films document different aspects of life in Northern Ireland and beyond. This selection covers the period 1959-72\, including events such as the Big Freeze of 1963 and the building of bridges and hospitals. During a work trip to Belgium he captures some stunning glimpses of the architecture and landscape. \nTime and again\, he focuses on his family and there are some wonderful moments chronicling birthdays\, holidays and the first day at school. Dr. McDowell is drawn to the water\, returning throughout the year to the coast for sailing and kite-flying\, and in the winter\, skating on a frozen pond. Bigger ships also capture his imagination\, with memorable footage of Belfast docks including the launch of the Canberra. \nThese atmospheric films glow with nostalgia and they represent a significant addition to the Digital Film Archive.\nWe would like to thank the McDowell family for sharing the films and for their help in creating and cataloguing the collection. The last word goes to them: \n‘As a family we are all delighted that the memories will be saved and passed on to our families and others.’

SUMMARY:Vienna Home Movie Day 2020 (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Vienna Home Movie Day 2020 (Virtual) \nThe Austrian Film Museum presents a special curated program from its own collection. Film amateurs or their partners and companions narrate and comment on the films. The program will be available on our YouTube channel from the 17th – 31st of October 2020. \n  \n“HG Produktion” – At the sound studio with Hilde Bezenker \nGeorg mit Projektor und Tonband ca. 1965\, 8mm\, black & white\, silent\, 2 min\nParfumerie Jindra 1962\, 8mm\, black & white\, silent\, 7 min\nEine Urlaubsfahrt 1962\, 8mm\, black & white\, silent\, 7 min (excerpt) \n“In the evenings\, when the children fell asleep\, I had time to edit our films\,” Hilde Bezenker remembers. She talks about filmmaking and filming as a shared activity and passion Hilde and her husband Georg had in common. The silent films are narrated by the film amateur at a sound studio during projection. \nStefanie Zingl (AFM) in conversation with Hilde Bezenker \n  \nEach Moment is a Bit of Paradise – Films by Franz Mulec \nEin Traum im Frühling 1967\, 8mm\, color\, magnetic sound\, 15 min\nBump 1977\, 8mm\, color\, magnetic sound\, 7 min\nSvetlana 1970\, 8mm\, color\, magnetic sound\, 14 min \nFranz Mulec (1932–2001) was a dancer and actor by profession\, working at the Raimund Theater in Vienna\, among other venues. In his spare time\, he made films with his friends and was a member of the cine club Klub der Kinoamateure Österreichs (KdKÖ). His films are characterized by vibrant colors and opulence due to both the recurring nature and flower motifs as well as the rollicking parties and frivolous merrymaking that they document and stage. The pure joy of life and a love for people are at the center of his films. \nMelanie Konrad (University of Vienna) in conversation with Stefan Mras\, a companion of Mulec’s \n  \nRudolf Enter\, film animator \nZu Besuch bei der Filmfachgruppe ca. 1950\, 9.5mm\, black & white\, silent\, 8 min\nDie Sterntaler 1986\, Super 8\, color\, magnetic sound\, 10 min\nPuppentrickfilme – aus der Praxis\, für die Praxis 1986\, Super 8\, color\, magnetic sound\, 13 min \nRudolf Enter\, born in 1927\, says he discovered his passion for animated film as a child: at the age of 10 or 12 he began drawing his first movement studies on blank celluloid strips using ink and a pen. At the end of the 1960s\, he made his first color drawing films\, and a little later\, puppet animation films for educational use on behalf of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education. As this small selection from his extensive oeuvre shows\, not only did Rudolf Enter animate films\, he also animated people to film. \nWith an introduction by Vrääth Öhner ( Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Digital History)\, in the framework of the FWF research project “Educational Film Practice in Austria”

SUMMARY:Virtual Moving History – Home Movie Day 2020 – Program 1: Travel
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate Home Movie Month and National Archives Month\, MIPoPS is dedicating October’s Virtual Moving History screenings with Northwest Film Forum to presenting home movies from local archives (and the basements of MIPoPS staff!). The overarching theme of Home Movie Day 2020\, New Ways of Connecting\, speaks to our need to bring people together to celebrate amateur filmmaking\, if only in virtual space.\nOn Home Movie Day\, we recognize and celebrate the value of each person’s ability to record and tell their own histories. We laugh at the surreal\, existential delight of seeing ourselves bathed in a sink as babies; we cry hearing the voices of loved ones who have passed. Our stories come to life again on the screen. This month is an opportunity to watch\, talk about\, and take care of home movies! \nThe program on October 11 will be a livestream introduced by Hannah Palin (Film Curator at Special Collections\, University of Washington )\, themed around TRAVEL: clips will include circus footage from an Idahoan optometrist\, squirming bear cubs that are way too people-friendly\, and occasional gorgeous\, hand-inked title cards. \n** Read the full program of featured film clips and watch the stream at showtime\, either on NWFF’s site ( bit.ly/mipops2020hmd ) or Facebook ( facebook.com/nwfilmforum/videos ) No payment or password is necessary to view Moving History programs. Donations to NWFF and/or MIPoPS are optional but appreciated! If you’d like to chat with MIPoPS archivists during the program\, watch on NWFF’s Facebook Videos page.
