SUMMARY:Chicago Home Movie Day
DESCRIPTION:Once again\, Chicago Film Archives and the Chicago Film Society join forces to present CHICAGO HOME MOVIE DAY at the Chicago History Museum. \nChicago Home Movie Day is dedicated to YOUR home movies. From 11:00 AM until 3:00 PM\, archivists and projectionists will inspect and project any celluloid home movies that walk in the door. We encourage providers of these gems to introduce their films to an eager HMD audience. Don’t have any films? Feel free to just sit back and enjoy the show. \nThis year\, CFA invites you to bring your home movies to our office beforehand for a brief introduction on how to care for your films (masks and distancing required). While you are there\, CFA can inspect one or two of your home movies to make sure they are sturdy enough to project. We will then schedule them as part of the live Home Movie Day presentation on October 16th at the Chicago History Museum. \nBONUS: For those of you who bring your home movies to our office before the event\, CFA will digitize 100 feet of 16mm or 50 feet of 8mm/Super 8 at no cost to you! \nYou can make an appointment using this form. If you need to schedule on a day or time that is not available\, give us a call at (312) 243-1808 or email info@chicagofilmarchives.org and we’ll see what we can do. \nVisit https://www.chicagohistory.org/covid19safety/ for more information about the Chicago History Museum’s COVID-19 safety protocols.

SUMMARY:HOME MOVIE DAY 2021 at Filmmuseum Potsdam: WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET?
DESCRIPTION:Smartphones have largely replaced film cameras and camcorders as tools for amateur filmmakers. What you see is what you get is taken for granted today. In the past\, it was a case of anxious waiting until the last second of film development. Were all the parameters on the camera set correctly? Sometimes exposed material was carelessly left lying around to be developed years later and then inserted into a projector. \nAnticipation of the unknown – this is also what drives a cine film scene that is still alive today. In this spirit\, we cordially invite you to bring your home-made films to the Home Movie Day at the Filmmuseum Potsdam. Trained experts will view and check your films with you on site (8mm\, 9.5mm and 16mm). Specialists from the company Screenshot will show you how analogue films can be digitised and even offer a free sample. If you dare\, you can present selected films you have brought with you on the big screen in front of a cinema audience at the end. We are also looking forward to current films. In addition\, a varied accompanying programme invites you to immerse yourself in the world of narrow and amateur film. \nWith presentations from the festival Dresdner Schmalfilmtage\, the archive of family- and amateur film at university of Paderborn and a new book about the Ozaphan home cinema.

SUMMARY:Mining (And Manipulating) The Home Movie - Canadian Images in Conversation Screening
DESCRIPTION:Mining (And Manipulating) The Home Movie \nCurated by Madison More \nLive Panel Discussion: October 16 at 7pm \nThe experimental filmmakers whose work is in this program will discuss the idealistic nature of home movies and how their work addresses issues of memory and decay. \nScreening Dates: October 16 – October 23 \nProgram Description: \nAn often untapped source of historical evidence\, home movies (and other types of orphaned film) offer a snapshot of Canadian life not recorded in mainstream histories of our country. While they can help people discover and remember our collective history\, some historians and culture theorists have criticized their use as historical evidence\, citing that they tend to idealize the past through what was filmed\, how it was filmed\, and who was filming. Containing personal and found home movies\, as well as other types of source material\, the films in this program reflect on the complexities of home movies and the realities they depict through the ways they incorporate and manipulate their source material. Emphasizing themes of memory and decay\, the films raise questions about how our collective history should be remembered. Who gets to tell our stories? How should those stories be told? How can we begin documenting the past in a way that is reflective of different cultural groups? \nFilm List: \nChristina Battle\, nostalgia (April 2001to present)\, 2005\, 4 min\, 16mm \nCritiques our idealistic view of the past by distorting images and sound. \nEva Kolcze and Philip Hoffman\, By The Time We Got To Expo\, 9 min\, Digital \nRe-visits Expo 67 by manipulating footage from the event with different photochemical processes. \nJohn Kneller\, Separation\, 2008\, 6:30 min\, 16mm \nSeparates the different colours of the film emulsion of home movies\, drawing attention to the layered materiality of the film strip. \nAmanda Dawn Christie\, Mechanical Memory\, 2005\, 5 min\, 16mm \nExplores the decay of memory and the filmstrip using super 8mm footage taken by the filmmaker’s father. \nSara Angelucci\, Snow\, 2000\, 5 minutes\, digital \nUses the final fragments of home movies to create a series of “endings\,” each one being obliterated by the white dots that appear at the end of each filmstrip. \nFreda Guttman\, Film Muet / Silent Movie\, 1994\, 9:20 min\, digital \nExperiments with 8mm home movie footage of the filmmaker to explore how familial roles are represented in the space of the home movie. \nLouise Bourque\, Imprint\, 1997\, 14 min\, 16mm \nAlters home movie footage of the filmmaker’s family home through tinting\, bleaching\, and other experimental practices. \nLindsay McIntyre\, her silent life\, 2011\, 31 min\, digital \nUses filmed images and audio interviews to explore the life of the filmmaker’s Inuk great-grandmother. \n————————– \nCanadian Images in Conversation is a new collective that is inspired by the legacy of the Canadian Images Film Festival\, which took place in Peterborough between 1978-1984. With support from the ReFrame Film Festival and Trent University\, CIIC aims to showcase Canadian films and filmmakers through regular screenings and artist talks. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/canadianimagesinconversation

SUMMARY:Home Movie Day + Modernism Week Teaser Reel
DESCRIPTION:2019 marked the first ever HMD in Palm Springs\, CA.  It was a great event with lots of community participation and amazing support from our LA friends.  We thought of it as a practice-run for 2020\, when we hoped to partner more closely with Modernism Week (Feb 15-21)  and local libraries and historical societies. This short teaser reel\, which we will be pushing out on social media with the assistance of our local cultural center/independent movie theatre and the PS Public Library\, features footage from the California desert and gives viewers a sense of the HMD mission.

SUMMARY:Traça [Moth] – Mostra de Filmes de Arquivos Familiares
DESCRIPTION:TRAÇA [moth] is a project for gathering\, study and exhibition of home movies\, promoted by the Lisbon City Council. \nIt has existed since 2015 as a Home Movie Showcase and since its beginning it has been established on two fundamental pillars: the territory\, taken from the history of its occupation\, and the archive\, whose limits it seeks to expand. \nThe program of TRAÇA’s 3rd edition\, in 2020\, is presented through a digital route at the web site http://www.traca-arquivo.com/\, a route that maps out the paths between Marvila and Alvalade\, two neighborhoods of Lisbon. The platform was updated on each of the days of the local exhibition\, between the 19th of October and the 25th of October. Following each digital route of events and screenings\, several concepts are discussed\, such as: displacement\, construction\, self-construction\, occupation and memory. \nThe project seeks to draw an imaginary and common map that intersects and superimposes the ‘emotionality’ of the memories and the private images that it is gathering\, with the ‘reality’ of the streets and buildings of Lisbon. In this vein\, the history of Lisbon gains another dimension\, private\, unique\, hitherto unknown and plural\, a counterpoint to the official history as it is written by the eyes of those who inhabit the city. \n

SUMMARY:Home Movie Day Perú
DESCRIPTION:Proyecto Cine Amateur Peruano\, a website centered on the preservation of 16mm\, 8mm and Super 8 films from Perú\, has launched to the world at www.cineamateurperuano.org. The project aims to spread knowledge on Peruvian home movies and other non-professional film expressions\, so these neglected artifacts are noticed by families and cared for appropriately. \nThe project invites individuals who own amateur Peruvian films to register these through an online form\, so the information provided will be used to explore further partnerships and grants for digitization. In exchange\, families will be sent an easy preservation guide for storing audiovisual materials at home. \nIn collaboration with Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola\, forty-two home movies from Perú were recently digitized in a Filmfabriek scanner at 2K resolution. These films are part of the private collection Cine Íntimo from Efraín Bedoya\, director of MUTA Film Festival. Furthermore\, one of the works shot in Super-8 stock from the amateur photographer and filmmaker Alberto García García (Iquitos\, 1925-2020)\, a documentary on the city where he lived most of his life\, Pucallpa\, was also scanned and will be screened in the near future. \nWe want to celebrate\, for the first time in our country\, Home Movie Day. Although we cannot reunite in person to share our amateur films or do an inspection of the incoming materials\, we want to introduce this audiovisual world heritage conformed by personal memories to citizenship. Through the site Cine Amateur Peruano\, a selection of the orphan films collection Cine Íntimo and the full personal archive of a family from Lima will be available from December 7th to January 3rd. The videos are accompanied by descriptions of the content and materials themselves. \nWe hope next year a series of in-site events around Perú will be possible. Home movies are important beyond the family realm!

SUMMARY:Día de las Películas Familiares
DESCRIPTION:Día de las Películas Familiares (online). \nHome Movie Day \nFor more than fifteen years the Home Movie Day has been celebrated around the world. It is a projection of amateur films\, brought by the public\, in which everyone actively participates in the exercise of recognizing years\, places\, events and countless familiar and foreign faces. In some ways it is a journey through domestic life throughout the 20th century\, where a fascinating universe of small daily stories unfolds allowing us to remember and recognize ourselves through those familiar and strange images that come from the past\, that foreign country. This year we will carry out an online edition of the event\, where we will screen a selection of some of the best films that have passed through Home Movie Day over time\, along with copies that remain almost unseen. The screenings will go\, as usual\, with a talk about the films itselfs and simple recommendations for their preservation will be given by specialists from the Museo del Cine de Buenos Aires.

SUMMARY:Virtual Moving History: Home Movie Day (Part 2) About Town & Celebrations
DESCRIPTION:October is Home Movie Month and National Archives Month! To celebrate\, MIPoPS is dedicating Virtual Moving History screenings in October to presenting local home movies from local archives and staff family collections. New ways of connecting — that is the overarching theme for Home Movie Day 2020\, bringing people together in virtual space to celebrate amateur films and filmmaking. \nHome Movie Day is a celebration of amateur films and filmmaking held locally and across the globe. On Home Movie Day\, we recognize the value of each person’s ability to tell their own stories. We celebrate the democratization of filmmaking and of recording our personal histories. We laugh at seeing ourselves in the bathtub as a baby and we cry hearing the voices of loved ones who have passed. We excitedly shout\, “I remember that!” as our stories come to life again on the screen. Home Movie Day is an opportunity to watch\, talk about\, and take care of home movies! \n\n\n\n\n\n** Introduction by Benjamin Schultz-Figueroa (Assistant Professor of Film Studies at Seattle University) ** \nCurated home movie footage includes: \n\nGorilla Gone Wild\, How Not to Behave in the Library (1984)\n– Original format: 16mm (color with sound)\n– – University of Washington Libraries\, Special Collections\nThe film uses an interaction between a librarian and a gorilla to demonstrate unacceptable behavior in UW’s Odegaard Library. The gorilla breaks a host of library rules\, misusing the copy machine and printed materials.\nSeattle Engineering Work/Home Movies (1932)\n– Original format: 16mm film (black and white\, silent); transferred from Digital Betacam\n– – Seattle Municipal Archives (Item 525\, Record Series 2613-09)\nSeattle Engineering Dept. employees’ families and guests enjoy a holiday dinner and parade.\nFlorestine Ware Papers (1960–82)\n– Original format: Super 8mm (color); transferred from DVCAM\n– – University of Washington Libraries\, Special Collections\nThese reels of Super 8mm shot by Seattle-area activist Florestine Ware relate to her work as a caravan leader and spokesperson for the North West Convention to the Poor People’s Campaign\, 1967. This footage also includes Ware’s family on a camping trip and at a wedding.\nHome Movie Footage of David McGee (circa 1940)\n– Original Format: 16mm\n– – Seattle Art Museum Historic Media Collection – Dorothy Stimson Bullitt Library\, Seattle Art Museum\nDavid McGee and his family on various outings in downtown Seattle and the Seattle Asian Art Museum in Volunteer Park.\nEdward and Jeanette Otsuka Film Collection (1952–57)\n– Original format: 16mm (color\, silent)\n– – University of Washington Libraries\, Special Collections\nThe Otsuka family play in the snow\, dance with cherry blossoms\, hunts deer\, perform in a play\, attend the Seafair Parade\, and take family portraits together. The outfits are all incredible\, and frankly it is hard to overstate the beauty and color of this footage! It’s an irresistible time capsule of ’50s Seattle.\nEdwin C. Thompson’s Seattle’s World’s Fair Home Movie (July 1962)\n– Original format: 8mm (color\, silent)\n– – University of Washington Libraries\, Special Collections\nAn 8mm record of Ed and Edith Thompson’s experience attending the Century 21 Exposition at Seattle Center. Monorail rides\, Space Needle views\, water-skiing\, amusement park and cable car rides – the works! The film ends with nighttime scenes with prominent neon signs and views from the cable car ride of the fairgrounds at night.\nTanejiro Kushi Family Films (1925–39)\n– Original format: 8mm (black and white\, silent)\n– – University of Washington Libraries\, Special Collections\nThe Kushi family filmed marriages\, graduations\, festivals\, and family trips both in the US and in Japan. Includes footage of the Mukai Cold Process Fruit Barreling Plant on Vashon Island and views of the Seattle waterfront.\n\n+ A brief showcase of MIPoPS staff home movies!
