SUMMARY:Home Movie Day + Modernism Week Teaser Reel
DESCRIPTION:2019 marked the first ever HMD in Palm Springs\, CA.  It was a great event with lots of community participation and amazing support from our LA friends.  We thought of it as a practice-run for 2020\, when we hoped to partner more closely with Modernism Week (Feb 15-21)  and local libraries and historical societies. This short teaser reel\, which we will be pushing out on social media with the assistance of our local cultural center/independent movie theatre and the PS Public Library\, features footage from the California desert and gives viewers a sense of the HMD mission.

SUMMARY:Home Movie Day Perú
DESCRIPTION:Proyecto Cine Amateur Peruano\, a website centered on the preservation of 16mm\, 8mm and Super 8 films from Perú\, has launched to the world at www.cineamateurperuano.org. The project aims to spread knowledge on Peruvian home movies and other non-professional film expressions\, so these neglected artifacts are noticed by families and cared for appropriately. \nThe project invites individuals who own amateur Peruvian films to register these through an online form\, so the information provided will be used to explore further partnerships and grants for digitization. In exchange\, families will be sent an easy preservation guide for storing audiovisual materials at home. \nIn collaboration with Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola\, forty-two home movies from Perú were recently digitized in a Filmfabriek scanner at 2K resolution. These films are part of the private collection Cine Íntimo from Efraín Bedoya\, director of MUTA Film Festival. Furthermore\, one of the works shot in Super-8 stock from the amateur photographer and filmmaker Alberto García García (Iquitos\, 1925-2020)\, a documentary on the city where he lived most of his life\, Pucallpa\, was also scanned and will be screened in the near future. \nWe want to celebrate\, for the first time in our country\, Home Movie Day. Although we cannot reunite in person to share our amateur films or do an inspection of the incoming materials\, we want to introduce this audiovisual world heritage conformed by personal memories to citizenship. Through the site Cine Amateur Peruano\, a selection of the orphan films collection Cine Íntimo and the full personal archive of a family from Lima will be available from December 7th to January 3rd. The videos are accompanied by descriptions of the content and materials themselves. \nWe hope next year a series of in-site events around Perú will be possible. Home movies are important beyond the family realm!

SUMMARY:Día de las Películas Familiares
DESCRIPTION:Día de las Películas Familiares (online). \nHome Movie Day \nFor more than fifteen years the Home Movie Day has been celebrated around the world. It is a projection of amateur films\, brought by the public\, in which everyone actively participates in the exercise of recognizing years\, places\, events and countless familiar and foreign faces. In some ways it is a journey through domestic life throughout the 20th century\, where a fascinating universe of small daily stories unfolds allowing us to remember and recognize ourselves through those familiar and strange images that come from the past\, that foreign country. This year we will carry out an online edition of the event\, where we will screen a selection of some of the best films that have passed through Home Movie Day over time\, along with copies that remain almost unseen. The screenings will go\, as usual\, with a talk about the films itselfs and simple recommendations for their preservation will be given by specialists from the Museo del Cine de Buenos Aires.

SUMMARY:Virtual Moving History: Home Movie Day (Part 2) About Town & Celebrations
DESCRIPTION:October is Home Movie Month and National Archives Month! To celebrate\, MIPoPS is dedicating Virtual Moving History screenings in October to presenting local home movies from local archives and staff family collections. New ways of connecting — that is the overarching theme for Home Movie Day 2020\, bringing people together in virtual space to celebrate amateur films and filmmaking. \nHome Movie Day is a celebration of amateur films and filmmaking held locally and across the globe. On Home Movie Day\, we recognize the value of each person’s ability to tell their own stories. We celebrate the democratization of filmmaking and of recording our personal histories. We laugh at seeing ourselves in the bathtub as a baby and we cry hearing the voices of loved ones who have passed. We excitedly shout\, “I remember that!” as our stories come to life again on the screen. Home Movie Day is an opportunity to watch\, talk about\, and take care of home movies! \n\n\n\n\n\n** Introduction by Benjamin Schultz-Figueroa (Assistant Professor of Film Studies at Seattle University) ** \nCurated home movie footage includes: \n\nGorilla Gone Wild\, How Not to Behave in the Library (1984)\n– Original format: 16mm (color with sound)\n– – University of Washington Libraries\, Special Collections\nThe film uses an interaction between a librarian and a gorilla to demonstrate unacceptable behavior in UW’s Odegaard Library. The gorilla breaks a host of library rules\, misusing the copy machine and printed materials.\nSeattle Engineering Work/Home Movies (1932)\n– Original format: 16mm film (black and white\, silent); transferred from Digital Betacam\n– – Seattle Municipal Archives (Item 525\, Record Series 2613-09)\nSeattle Engineering Dept. employees’ families and guests enjoy a holiday dinner and parade.\nFlorestine Ware Papers (1960–82)\n– Original format: Super 8mm (color); transferred from DVCAM\n– – University of Washington Libraries\, Special Collections\nThese reels of Super 8mm shot by Seattle-area activist Florestine Ware relate to her work as a caravan leader and spokesperson for the North West Convention to the Poor People’s Campaign\, 1967. This footage also includes Ware’s family on a camping trip and at a wedding.\nHome Movie Footage of David McGee (circa 1940)\n– Original Format: 16mm\n– – Seattle Art Museum Historic Media Collection – Dorothy Stimson Bullitt Library\, Seattle Art Museum\nDavid McGee and his family on various outings in downtown Seattle and the Seattle Asian Art Museum in Volunteer Park.\nEdward and Jeanette Otsuka Film Collection (1952–57)\n– Original format: 16mm (color\, silent)\n– – University of Washington Libraries\, Special Collections\nThe Otsuka family play in the snow\, dance with cherry blossoms\, hunts deer\, perform in a play\, attend the Seafair Parade\, and take family portraits together. SUMMARY:Tennessee Archive of Moving Image and Sound Home Movies Livestream with original scores from Sarah Louise and Jackie Beckey
DESCRIPTION:This year\, TAMIS will once again participate in Home Movie Day\, with a virtual event spotlighting two of our fascinating home movie collections\, with original scores composed for the event. \nIn 1947\, Dr. David Swartz shot 22-minutes of 8mm film candidly documenting the lives of the Melungeon community of Vardy\, in the mountains of Tennessee. Dr. Swartz’s home movies show his neighbors at work and recreation at their homes\, as well as around the Vardy Community School\, which was founded to provide primary education to children of the multi-racial Melungeon communities in the region. \nFor this silent film\, TAMIS commissioned a score from Sarah Louise Henson\, an Asheville\, North Carolina-based musician who has been praised for her innovative 12-string guitar playing\, both solo and in the duo House and Land with fiddler Sally Anne Morgan. On her latest album for the Thrill Jockey label\, Nighttime Birds and Morning Stars\, Henson broadens beyond folk forms\, turning streams of raw electric guitar into entire oceans of aural texture. Her music mines components of the Appalachian folk music she is steeped in\, as well as spiritual jazz\, contemporary classical\, and new age\, while drawing intensely personal inspiration from the natural world.  \nIn addition to making promotional films and a 1945 live-action version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs\, Mildred Keister Dennis shot thousands of feet of 16mm home movies in her hometown of Knoxville and the surrounding East Tennessee area. She was particularly fond of filming in the Great Smoky Mountains\, often placing her costumed daughter (who also played Snow White) within bucolic mountain landscapes filled with wildflowers and trees. She would then add intertitles and edit the films into short works she would exhibit at various community events. \n  \nIn 2016\, musician and librarian Jackie Beckey was awarded an Artist Residency in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. As part of her residency\, Beckey composed and performed a live score for a film compiled of footage selected from TAMIS’s large collection of Smoky Mountain footage. As that was a one-time live event\, for Home Movie Day 2020 we invited Beckey to pair some of her music with a 20-minute selection of Mrs. Dennis’s films that were not included in the original project. \nJackie Beckey is a musician and film score composer based in Los Angeles. Her work with the bands Brute Heart and Myrrh has drawn attention within the independent music world. She has written and performed original silent film scores for the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis\, Empire Drive-In Film Festival in New York\, and The Poor Farm in Wisconsin. Recent projects include a Jerome Foundation Travel and Study grant to research Métis fiddle playing in Canada\, and an Artist Residency in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. \nShe currently resides in Los Angeles\, where she performs with the psych-rock band Florina and works as a Librarian at The Huntington. \nThe link for the livestream will be posted soon.

SUMMARY:Bologna Home Movie Day 2020 - Archivio Aperto XIII
DESCRIPTION:Amateur cinema celebration\, in its forms of sperimentation and family memories\, medium length films and special unreleased material\, boundless works and tiny excerpts\, it finds large space within Archivio Aperto (Open Archive)\, this year at its XIII edition – exclusively virtul and online. An impetuous programme which starts on October 24-25 and only ends early in December\, proposing a multifaceted gaze upon the film-amateur phenomenon. Within its boundaries\, a rich sequence of meeetings with experts and guests\, and films shows\, tie with one another\, gathered in categories: Arte & Experimental Cinema\, for those who most dared in amateur cinema\, Archive Bites – far more than an amount of odds and ends – and then comes the section dedicated to writer Gianni Rodari and his course throughout a school in Reggio Emilia\, Recycled Cinema and Archive Docs – focusing on films\, more or less contemporary\, which make and made use of material from private archive. \nIn particular\, October\, Sunday 25\, a multitude of events converge\, brilliantly enriching the festival and amateur cinema itself. David Perlov’s Diary is at the center of a section dedicated to this Israeli filmmaker’s work\, linking theme-wise with Jonas Mekas’s and Boris Lehman’s works\, yet protagonist in the previous editions. The Cine-Eccentrici category\, a news in the programme\, sheds some light on the grotesque\, imaginative and unpredictable work by Mauro Mingardi\, amateur from Bologna with professional wit and refined ingenuity. Six films\, among which Vita d’artista\, are made available to the public. Finally\, the Fantastic Stories by Robert Niosi & Co.\, the Italian-American amatuer who\, between the late Sixties and 1971\, shoots with his crew-gang excellent parodies\, revealing a peculiar penchant for animation and visual effects. \nOn Sunday\, October 25\, in addition to that\, at 4 pm (local time)\, will take place the usual tour to Home Movies – Archivio Nazionale del Film di Famiglia and the meeting with those who have dealt (and worried) with the preservation of the film\, memory\, historical and cultural heritage of amateur and private cinema in Italy. The archive door will be opened virtually online. As all events in the festival\, this will be freely accessible as well\, and\, as almost all events\, available worldwide.

SUMMARY:Home Movie Day "As the Earth Turns" Live Online Screening
DESCRIPTION:“As the Earth Turns” (Richard Lyford\, 1938\, 46 minutes). Live screening on Zoom with introduction and Q&A with producer and composer Ed Hartman and presentation on the life and films of Richard Lyford. \nIn 1937\, in Seattle\, twenty-year-old budding filmmaker Richard Lyford\, using his own equipment \,had already created 58 plays and 9 never released\, award-winning films. He went to work for Disney Studios\, and direct and edit a 1950 Academy Award-winning documentary. Richard H. Lyford’s films have developed a following among film historians since his early “amateur” films are some of the first “indie” films ever created outside of Hollywood. Lyford experimented with special effects\, and models\, and was becoming an excellent director. His final and most challenging film of this era was “As the Earth Turns”\, with a screenplay based on “The Man Who Rocked the Earth” by Arthur Train and Robert Williams Wood\, 1915. It was filmed in the Pacific Northwest\, in and around Seattle. \n“As the Earth Turns” is a 45 minute\, sci-fi film that foresaw WWII\, future- technology\, climate change\, and the extreme need for peace\, as the world was drifting back into world war again. The main character\, “PAX” (“Peace” in Latin)\, is played by Lyford\, himself\, a scientist who desperately wants peace and uses climate-changing science to keep mankind from war.
