SUMMARY:Traça [Moth] – Mostra de Filmes de Arquivos Familiares
DESCRIPTION:TRAÇA [moth] is a project for gathering\, study and exhibition of home movies\, promoted by the Lisbon City Council. \nIt has existed since 2015 as a Home Movie Showcase and since its beginning it has been established on two fundamental pillars: the territory\, taken from the history of its occupation\, and the archive\, whose limits it seeks to expand. \nThe program of TRAÇA’s 3rd edition\, in 2020\, is presented through a digital route at the web site http://www.traca-arquivo.com/\, a route that maps out the paths between Marvila and Alvalade\, two neighborhoods of Lisbon. The platform was updated on each of the days of the local exhibition\, between the 19th of October and the 25th of October. Following each digital route of events and screenings\, several concepts are discussed\, such as: displacement\, construction\, self-construction\, occupation and memory. \nThe project seeks to draw an imaginary and common map that intersects and superimposes the ‘emotionality’ of the memories and the private images that it is gathering\, with the ‘reality’ of the streets and buildings of Lisbon. In this vein\, the history of Lisbon gains another dimension\, private\, unique\, hitherto unknown and plural\, a counterpoint to the official history as it is written by the eyes of those who inhabit the city. \n

SUMMARY:Home Movie Day Perú
DESCRIPTION:Proyecto Cine Amateur Peruano\, a website centered on the preservation of 16mm\, 8mm and Super 8 films from Perú\, has launched to the world at www.cineamateurperuano.org. The project aims to spread knowledge on Peruvian home movies and other non-professional film expressions\, so these neglected artifacts are noticed by families and cared for appropriately. \nThe project invites individuals who own amateur Peruvian films to register these through an online form\, so the information provided will be used to explore further partnerships and grants for digitization. In exchange\, families will be sent an easy preservation guide for storing audiovisual materials at home. \nIn collaboration with Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola\, forty-two home movies from Perú were recently digitized in a Filmfabriek scanner at 2K resolution. These films are part of the private collection Cine Íntimo from Efraín Bedoya\, director of MUTA Film Festival. Furthermore\, one of the works shot in Super-8 stock from the amateur photographer and filmmaker Alberto García García (Iquitos\, 1925-2020)\, a documentary on the city where he lived most of his life\, Pucallpa\, was also scanned and will be screened in the near future. \nWe want to celebrate\, for the first time in our country\, Home Movie Day. Although we cannot reunite in person to share our amateur films or do an inspection of the incoming materials\, we want to introduce this audiovisual world heritage conformed by personal memories to citizenship. Through the site Cine Amateur Peruano\, a selection of the orphan films collection Cine Íntimo and the full personal archive of a family from Lima will be available from December 7th to January 3rd. The videos are accompanied by descriptions of the content and materials themselves. \nWe hope next year a series of in-site events around Perú will be possible. Home movies are important beyond the family realm!

SUMMARY:Virtual Moving History: Home Movie Day (Part 2) About Town & Celebrations
DESCRIPTION:October is Home Movie Month and National Archives Month! To celebrate\, MIPoPS is dedicating Virtual Moving History screenings in October to presenting local home movies from local archives and staff family collections. New ways of connecting — that is the overarching theme for Home Movie Day 2020\, bringing people together in virtual space to celebrate amateur films and filmmaking. \nHome Movie Day is a celebration of amateur films and filmmaking held locally and across the globe. On Home Movie Day\, we recognize the value of each person’s ability to tell their own stories. We celebrate the democratization of filmmaking and of recording our personal histories. We laugh at seeing ourselves in the bathtub as a baby and we cry hearing the voices of loved ones who have passed. We excitedly shout\, “I remember that!” as our stories come to life again on the screen. Home Movie Day is an opportunity to watch\, talk about\, and take care of home movies! \n\n\n\n\n\n** Introduction by Benjamin Schultz-Figueroa (Assistant Professor of Film Studies at Seattle University) ** \nCurated home movie footage includes: \n\nGorilla Gone Wild\, How Not to Behave in the Library (1984)\n– Original format: 16mm (color with sound)\n– – University of Washington Libraries\, Special Collections\nThe film uses an interaction between a librarian and a gorilla to demonstrate unacceptable behavior in UW’s Odegaard Library. The gorilla breaks a host of library rules\, misusing the copy machine and printed materials.\nSeattle Engineering Work/Home Movies (1932)\n– Original format: 16mm film (black and white\, silent); transferred from Digital Betacam\n– – Seattle Municipal Archives (Item 525\, Record Series 2613-09)\nSeattle Engineering Dept. employees’ families and guests enjoy a holiday dinner and parade.\nFlorestine Ware Papers (1960–82)\n– Original format: Super 8mm (color); transferred from DVCAM\n– – University of Washington Libraries\, Special Collections\nThese reels of Super 8mm shot by Seattle-area activist Florestine Ware relate to her work as a caravan leader and spokesperson for the North West Convention to the Poor People’s Campaign\, 1967. This footage also includes Ware’s family on a camping trip and at a wedding.\nHome Movie Footage of David McGee (circa 1940)\n– Original Format: 16mm\n– – Seattle Art Museum Historic Media Collection – Dorothy Stimson Bullitt Library\, Seattle Art Museum\nDavid McGee and his family on various outings in downtown Seattle and the Seattle Asian Art Museum in Volunteer Park.\nEdward and Jeanette Otsuka Film Collection (1952–57)\n– Original format: 16mm (color\, silent)\n– – University of Washington Libraries\, Special Collections\nThe Otsuka family play in the snow\, dance with cherry blossoms\, hunts deer\, perform in a play\, attend the Seafair Parade\, and take family portraits together. Thompson’s Seattle’s World’s Fair Home Movie (July 1962)\n– Original format: 8mm (color\, silent)\n– – University of Washington Libraries\, Special Collections\nAn 8mm record of Ed and Edith Thompson’s experience attending the Century 21 Exposition at Seattle Center. SUMMARY:Home Movie Day "As the Earth Turns" Live Online Screening
DESCRIPTION:“As the Earth Turns” (Richard Lyford\, 1938\, 46 minutes). Live screening on Zoom with introduction and Q&A with producer and composer Ed Hartman and presentation on the life and films of Richard Lyford. \nIn 1937\, in Seattle\, twenty-year-old budding filmmaker Richard Lyford\, using his own equipment \,had already created 58 plays and 9 never released\, award-winning films. He went to work for Disney Studios\, and direct and edit a 1950 Academy Award-winning documentary. Richard H. Lyford’s films have developed a following among film historians since his early “amateur” films are some of the first “indie” films ever created outside of Hollywood. Lyford experimented with special effects\, and models\, and was becoming an excellent director. His final and most challenging film of this era was “As the Earth Turns”\, with a screenplay based on “The Man Who Rocked the Earth” by Arthur Train and Robert Williams Wood\, 1915. It was filmed in the Pacific Northwest\, in and around Seattle. \n“As the Earth Turns” is a 45 minute\, sci-fi film that foresaw WWII\, future- technology\, climate change\, and the extreme need for peace\, as the world was drifting back into world war again. The main character\, “PAX” (“Peace” in Latin)\, is played by Lyford\, himself\, a scientist who desperately wants peace and uses climate-changing science to keep mankind from war.

SUMMARY:Vienna Home Movie Day 2020 (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Vienna Home Movie Day 2020 (Virtual) \nThe Austrian Film Museum presents a special curated program from its own collection. Film amateurs or their partners and companions narrate and comment on the films. The program will be available on our YouTube channel from the 17th – 31st of October 2020. \n  \n“HG Produktion” – At the sound studio with Hilde Bezenker \nGeorg mit Projektor und Tonband ca. 1965\, 8mm\, black & white\, silent\, 2 min\nParfumerie Jindra 1962\, 8mm\, black & white\, silent\, 7 min\nEine Urlaubsfahrt 1962\, 8mm\, black & white\, silent\, 7 min (excerpt) \n“In the evenings\, when the children fell asleep\, I had time to edit our films\,” Hilde Bezenker remembers. She talks about filmmaking and filming as a shared activity and passion Hilde and her husband Georg had in common. The silent films are narrated by the film amateur at a sound studio during projection. \nStefanie Zingl (AFM) in conversation with Hilde Bezenker \n  \nEach Moment is a Bit of Paradise – Films by Franz Mulec \nEin Traum im Frühling 1967\, 8mm\, color\, magnetic sound\, 15 min\nBump 1977\, 8mm\, color\, magnetic sound\, 7 min\nSvetlana 1970\, 8mm\, color\, magnetic sound\, 14 min \nFranz Mulec (1932–2001) was a dancer and actor by profession\, working at the Raimund Theater in Vienna\, among other venues. In his spare time\, he made films with his friends and was a member of the cine club Klub der Kinoamateure Österreichs (KdKÖ). His films are characterized by vibrant colors and opulence due to both the recurring nature and flower motifs as well as the rollicking parties and frivolous merrymaking that they document and stage. The pure joy of life and a love for people are at the center of his films. \nMelanie Konrad (University of Vienna) in conversation with Stefan Mras\, a companion of Mulec’s \n  \nRudolf Enter\, film animator \nZu Besuch bei der Filmfachgruppe ca. 1950\, 9.5mm\, black & white\, silent\, 8 min\nDie Sterntaler 1986\, Super 8\, color\, magnetic sound\, 10 min\nPuppentrickfilme – aus der Praxis\, für die Praxis 1986\, Super 8\, color\, magnetic sound\, 13 min \nRudolf Enter\, born in 1927\, says he discovered his passion for animated film as a child: at the age of 10 or 12 he began drawing his first movement studies on blank celluloid strips using ink and a pen. At the end of the 1960s\, he made his first color drawing films\, and a little later\, puppet animation films for educational use on behalf of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education. As this small selection from his extensive oeuvre shows\, not only did Rudolf Enter animate films\, he also animated people to film. \nWith an introduction by Vrääth Öhner ( Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Digital History)\, in the framework of the FWF research project “Educational Film Practice in Austria”
